About the Event

In a story told through music, The Magic Violin String Trio invites you on a festive musical journey through the various regions and cultures of Eastern Europe and the Balkans. Expect a stimulating blend of festal pieces, season songs and merry party music, reminiscent of the traditional celebrations found in those regions.

About the Performers

The Magic Violin String Trio consists of Gundula Stojanova Gruen on lead violin and vocals, Jeremy Halliwell on guitar, and Fraser Perry on cello and backing vocals. Their repertoire comprises music collected by Gundula during her field travels through Eastern Europe and the Balkans. Gundula skilfully crafts fresh arrangements that preserve the ancient beauty and magic of these traditional melodies.

The musicians of the Magic Violin Trio have been performing together for over 10 years, primarily in larger ensembles. However, due to Covid-19 restrictions, which limited their rehearsal space to a maximum of three people, they began exploring the musical heritage of old Balkan ensembles, commonly found in rural areas and employing ancient native string instruments like tambura, oud, balalaika, brac, and various types of fiddles.

Since then, the Magic Violin String Trio has held performances in and around London in churches, concert halls, studio theatres, art cafes such as St Andrew’s Church in Kingsbury, St John’s on Bethnal Green, Cecil Sharp House in Camden, and the Royal Opera House.
