About the Event
In August 1945 Lydia Tischler, aged 16, arrived in Britain from Prague. After catching up on her lost years of formal education she worked in nursing and teaching, before training in psychotherapy under Anna Freud. Lydia became a pioneer in the field, forging a career that has touched the lives of hundreds and, at 94 she is still deeply involved in the profession as a practitioner and a teacher. Broadcaster and journalist Jonathan Freedland will be talking to Lydia about her remarkable life, and the extent to which the trauma and loss of her early childhood has determined its trajectory. Their conversation will be followed by a recital, including music that was performed and composed in Terezin, the Czech garrison town transformed by the Germans into a propaganda "show camp", where numerous acts of inspiring courage and resistance provided a cultural lifeline to prisoners such as Lydia.
